Day 1

You’ll probably land in Malang sometime in the morning or early afternoon. After you check into your hotel and settle in, don’t stress about rushing to any major sights—use today to soak in the local vibe.

Afternoon

  • Grab lunch at Depot Rawon Nguling—a popular place for it's rich, black beef soup that locals love. 

  • Then head to Alun-Alun Kota Malang. It’s a laid-back city square with fountains, giant trees, and lots of local snacks. 

  • While you’re there, visit the Masjid Agung Malang and admire the mix of Javanese and Middle Eastern architecture.

 

Evening

  • Enjoy dinner at Toko Oen. Try the Dutch-style steak or just enjoy ice cream.

  • If you still have energy, take a walk around Kampung Warna-Warni Jodipan. There are many imaginative murals throughout this rainbow-painted neighbourhood, which is very Instagrammable.

Day 2

Today is all about leaving the city and visiting Batu, a more casual and environmentally friendly town that is only a 45-minute drive away.

Morning

  • Even if you're not a huge zoo person, start with a trip to Batu Secret Zoo; it's well-kept, fun, and well-designed. Perfect if you want to see something new or are travelling with children.

 

Midday

  • Visit Museum Angkut, a quirky transportation museum featuring vintage cars, aircraft and street scenes from all over the world, which is located next door.

  • Stop for lunch at Warung Bethania, a peaceful garden café with delicious local dishes and a welcoming atmosphere.

 

Afternoon

  • Visit Coban Rondo Waterfall to experience the feel of nature. It's close by, and the surrounding wooded area is an excellent spot for a stroll or some photo ops.

 

Evening

  • Visit Batu Night Spectacular (BNS), a vibrant nighttime amusement park featuring rides, food vendors, and glowing lanterns, before returning to Malang. You can grab a light dinner here too.

Staying in malang for more than 2 days?

If you have extra time and want to explore nearby cities, here are some fantastic options within a few hours’ drive:

🌿 1. Tumpang

  • Distance from Malang: ~30 km

  • Attractions:

    • Mount Semeru (via Ranu Pane): This is where hikers begin their journey to Indonesia's tallest active volcano, Mount Semeru. Although the trek is difficult, the views are breathtaking.

    • Tumpang Waterfall: A calm waterfall ideal for a peaceful getaway, enclosed by greenery.

    • Ranu Pani Lake: A beautiful lake, trekkers frequently stop at before continuing on to Mount Semeru. It's a wonderful spot to relax in the middle of nature.

 

For those who enjoy hiking and exploring the outdoors, Tumpang provides a more natural and adventurous getaway.

🌳 2. Lawang

  • Distance from Malang: ~40 km

  • Attractions:

    • Taman Rekreasi Lawang: A leisure park famous for its clean air and peaceful surroundings. It's a great spot for walks or picnics.

    • Lawang’s Old Train Station: A famous colonial-style building that is now a well-liked location for photos

    • Coban Pelangi Waterfall: Another stunning waterfall close to Lawang that is perfect for hiking and taking in the scenery.

 

Lawang is a popular destination for people planning to relax and engage in mild outdoor activities because of its pleasant rural setting and milder temperatures.
